While at work earlier this week, I received several notifications about National Dessert Day on my mobile Twitter app.
Excuse me? I know things have gotten a bit out of hand with all of the national days that seem to randomly pop up every….day, but how in the world did I miss National Dessert Day?
Although I may have disagreed with Business Insider’s pick for Virginia’s dessert (peanut butter pie….meh), I have a few of my own that are worth the trip if you have a sweet tooth on your way through the Commonwealth.
1. Banana Pudding at Debbie’s Kitchen (Richmond, VA)
What originally drew me to this place was their reputation for good spoon bread. Somehow someone talked me into trying their banana pudding too. Delicious!

2. Apple Turnover at Jean Jacque’s Bakery (Richmond, VA)
When I worked in state government, periodically I would stop by this bakery to buy a sampling of their wares to share with my coworkers. The apple turnovers (and many other items)…….yummy!

3. Bread Pudding and Lemon Meringue Pie at Smithfield Gourmet Bakery (Smithfield, VA)
This place is heaven for the sweet tooth! There were so many options the day my friend and I went we weren’t sure where to start. I’d been craving bread pudding for quite some time. Although I prefer mine to be a bit more robust, this one didn’t disappoint.

4. Homemade Gelato at Strawberry Fields (Norfolk, VA)
I’ve been visiting this place for the last few years and I have never experienced a flavor that I didn’t like. Stop by and don’t be afraid to taste test! Just don’t hold up the line. 😉

5. Flan and Vanilla cake with Mango Sorbet at Tucanos Brazilian Grill (Newport News, VA)
One thing I enjoy about trying out a restaurant with a fellow foodie is having the chance to taste whatever they ordered. After lots of juicy Brazilian bbq, I needed something light to finish the meal right.

6. Spiced Apple Bread Pudding at Kona Grill (Richmond, VA)
If you like a hearty bread pudding then make sure you save room for this beautiful slice. Ask for at least two spoons because the portions are huge! I know the world behaves as if it revolves around pumpkin this time of year, but this apple bread pudding tastes like autumn on a plate….sans the leaves.

7. Assorted deliciousness Artisans Bakery & Cafe (Portsmouth, VA)
This place is absolutely dangerous! Although it specializes in the sweet and savory I couldn’t close out this post with out mentioning it. It was so good that I reviewed it here and here.

8. Chick-fil-A Chocolate Chunk Cookie (Check website for locations.)
I know, I know. This is a cookie from a fast food restaurant but have you tasted them?

How about you? What are some of your favorite places to visit to satisfy a sweet tooth?

Hahaha Virginia is a sleeper foodie haven. lol Please visit! And thanks for taking the time to comment. 😀
Oh my! The desserts look crazy good. I’m voting for the yellow cake with mango sorbet. We live in GA but with pictures like these, we may have to move to VA for awhile. Rock on B.
Thanks for stopping by, Brad! GA has some pretty amazing restaurants too. I’ve only driven through Georgia once, but it’s on my list of places to revisit for a foodie crawl. Thanks again!
I’m sorry I can’t remember exactly where this place is but it’s a Mom & Pop shop located on a little hill somewhere near Lexington, VA (I was teaching at Washington & Lee) with the best – and I’m talking THE BEST – chocolate pecan pie. Actually, any dessert the Mom made was outstanding but I caved for that pecan pie. Just scrumptious! Thanks for bringing up that heavenly memory! 🙂
